Boshqa qaynoq yulduzlardan keng polosali nurlanish spektrida vodorod, geliy, kislorod, uglerod, azot mavjud bo&#8217;lishi bilan farqlanadi. Volf-raye yulduzlari frantsuz astronomlari V. Volf va J. Raye nomlari bilan bog&#8217;liq. Shu olimlar o&#8217;sha yulduzlarning xususiyatlarini birinchi marta aniqlashgan (1867). Galaktikada taxminan 130 Volf-raye yulduzlari ma&#8217;lum. Ularning yorituvchanligi Quyosh yorituvchanligidan 4000 marta ortiq, effektiv temperaturasi 50000\u00b0 dan yuqori. Ularning radiusi 10-15 Quyosh radiusiga teng, massasi 10 Quyosh massasini tashkil qiladi. Ko&#8217;pchilik Volf-raye yulduzlari yaqin qo&#8217;shaloq yulduzlar hisoblanadi.
