O&#8217;z-o&#8217;zidan ko&#8217;payish xususiyatiga ega. Organizmlar Xromosomalari tuzilishi va funktsiyasiga ko&#8217;ra bir-biridan farq qiladi. &#8220;Xromosomalar&#8221; terminini nemis Anatomi va gistologi V.Valdeyer taklif etgan (1888). Xromosomalar asosini oqsillar va nukleoproteidlar bilan bog&#8217;langan 2 zanjirli DNK molekulasi tashkil etadi. Xromosomalardagi irsiy axborot DNK molekulasining tuzilishi va uning genetik kodi orqali ta&#8217;minlanadi. Xromosomalardagi DNKning taxlanishi va RNK sintezini boshkarishda oqsillar ishtirok etadi. Xromosomalar tuzilishi va funktsiyasining o&#8217;zgarishi Xromosomalar subbirliklari \u2014 xromonemalarning spirallanishi bilan bog&#8217;liq. Spirallangan Xromosomalar hujayra bo&#8217;linishi metafazasida yorug\u2019lik mikroskopda yaxshi ko&#8217;rinadi. Har bir xromosoma tsentromeralari orqali o&#8217;zaro tutashgan 2 ta xromatiddan iborat. Xromatidlar reduplikasiya natijasida hosil bo&#8217;ladi. Somatik hujayrlarda Xromosomalar diploid (2 tadan), ularning biri ona, 2-si ota organizmga tegishli. Jinsiy ko&#8217;payish (meyoz) da gomologik Xromosomalardan biri jinsiy hujayralarga o&#8217;tadi. Har xil turga mansub organizmlar bir-biridan Xromosomalar soni va ularning tuzilishi bilan farq qiladi. Hujayradagi barcha Xromosomalar kariotip (Xromosomalar to&#8217;plami)ni hosil qiladi. Kariotipda jinsiy Xromosomalar va autosomalar bo&#8217;ladi. Ayrim turlarda aynan shu tur uchun xos genlarga ega bo&#8217;lmagan qo&#8217;shimcha Xromosomalar ham uchraydi.
