Nemis mumtoz adabiyotining asoschilaridan. Lyudvigsburgdagi lotin maktabini tugatgach (1772), harbiy maktab (akademiya) ning huquq va tibbiyot bo&#8217;limlarida o&#8217;qigan. Akademiyadagi maslaqdosh do&#8217;stlari bilan birga &#8220;muxolif poetik klub&#8221; tuzgan. Shillerning o&#8217;zaro insoniy munosabatlardagi nafrat va g&#8217;arazgo&#8217;ylikni tasvirlovchi &#8220;qaroqchilar&#8221; (1781) singari dastlabki asarlari shu klubda muhokama etilgan. Mazkur tragediyada uslubiy har xillik (shekspirona tragizm, barokko san&#8217;atiga xos istioraviylik, Russo asarlariga xos notiqlik) ka yo&#8217;l qo&#8217;yilgan bo&#8217;lsada, u nemis dramaturgiyasida siyosiy yo&#8217;nalishga ega bo&#8217;lgan yangi lirik drama janrini boshlab bergan. Shiller tibbiy akademiyani tugatgach (1780), Shtutgartga polk feldsheri etib yuborilgpn. Shillerning talqiniga ko&#8217;ra, estetik tarbiya kishilar o&#8217;rtasida insoniy munosabatlarning barqarorlashishi, ularda insonparvarlik fazilatlarining shakllanishiga xizmat qilishi zarur. Uning 80-90-yillar lirikasida xuddi shu yo&#8217;nalishdagi histuyg&#8217;u va kechinmalar ifodalangan. Erkin dunyoni barpo etish orzuideali bilan Real voqelik o&#8217;rtasidagi ziddiyat Shiller ijodidagi yetakchi kolliziyani tashkil etadi.
