Opera va kantata bilan deyarlik bir davr (16-17- asrlar)da Italiyada shakllangan. Lekin kantatadan yirikligi, muayyan syujetga asoslanganligi, operadan esa dramatik rivoj urniga bayon xususiyatlari yetakchiligi bilan ajralib turadi. Oratoriyaning keng kulamli mumtoz namunalarini G. Gendel yaratgan. U o\u2019z orollarida, asosan, injil mavzulariga tayanib, xalq va uning qahramonlarini madh etgan. Oratoriya Yevropa kompozitorlari (I. S. Bax, Y. Gaydn, G. Berlioz, F. List, R. Shuman, A. Onegger, P. Dessau, K. Pendereskiy, Yu. Shaporin, A. Shnitke va boshqalar) ijodidan keng o&#8217;rin olgan. Markaziy Osiyo mamlakatlarida Q. Moddobosanov (Qirg&#8217;iziston), G. Jubanova (Qozog&#8217;iston) va boshqalarning Oratoriyalari mashhur. O&#8217;zbekistonda I.
