Oligofrenopedagogikaning asosiy vazifasi aqli zaif bolalarning rivojlanishida korrektsion tarbiyaning mohiyatini ochib berish, ulardagi nuqsonning rivojlanishini va nuqsonning o&#8217;zini bartaraf etish yo&#8217;llarini, maxsus maktab va maktabgacha tarbiya muassasalarida aqli zaif bolalar uchun maxsus ta&#8217;limtarbiya va korrektsion rivojlantiruvchi ish va metodlarni ishlab chiqish hamda takomillashtirishdan iborat. Oligofrenopedagogika umumiy va maxsus pedagogika, psixologiya, anatomiya, fiziologiya, genetika, nevropatologiya, pediatriya, oligofreniya klinikasi yutuqlariga asoslanadi. 19-asr boshlarida tibbiyot va pedagogikaning rivojlanishi tufayli muayyan yo&#8217;nalish sifatida vujudga keldi. O&#8217;sha asrning o&#8217;rtalarida frantsuz vrachi va pedagogi E.Segen (1812-80) aqli zaif bolalarni o&#8217;qitish va tarbiyalash nazariyasini ishlab chiqdi. Ayniqsa, uning &#8220;aqliy normal bo&#8217;lmagan bolalar tarbiyasi, gigiyenasi va axloqiy davosi&#8221; asari (1846) Oligofrenopedagogikada katta yutuq bo&#8217;ldi. Chet ellarda Oligofrenopedagogikaning shakllanishi J.Demor va O. Dekroli (Belgiya), B.Mennel va A.Fuks (Germaniya), A.Bine, J. Filipi va I.Bonkur (Frantsiya), V.M.Bexterev, P.F.Lesgaft, L.S. Vigotskiy (Rossiya) va boshqalar nomi bilan bog&#8217;liq. O&#8217;zbekistonda S.T.Aytmetova, K. K.Mamedov, P. M.Po&#8217;latova, M.I.Soatovalar tomonidan Oligofrenopedagogika bo&#8217;yicha o&#8217;quv qo&#8217;llanmasi tayyorlanib nashr etilgan. O&#8217;zbekistonda aqli zaif bolalarni tarbiyalash va o&#8217;qitish maxsus yordamchi maktablaraa amalga oshiriladi. Oligofrenopedagogikada bola his-tuyg&#8217;usini boyitishga, nutqini rivojlantirishga katta ahamiyat berilib, ta&#8217;lim-tarbiyaviy jarayonda ko&#8217;rgazmali qurollar va boshqa metodlardan keng foydalaniladi. Aqli zaif bolalarni psixologik-pedagogik o&#8217;rganish asosida har bir bolaga individual yondashiladi. O&#8217;zbekistonda oligofreno-pedagoglarni Toshkent pedagogika universiteti va pedagogika institutlarining Defektologiya fakultetlari tayyorlaydi. Oligofrenopedagogikaga oid ilmiy tadqiqot ishlari O&#8217;zbekiston pedagogika fanlari ilmiy tadqiqot institutida, Toshkent pedagogika universiteti va ayrim pedagogika institutlarining Defektologiya kafedralarida olib boriladi.
