Tarkibi barqaror emas. Izomorf aralashmalar sifatida Al, Mg, Ni, Co, Si, Zn mavjud. Monoklin singoniyada kristallanadi. Tuproqsimon va zich (opal ko&#8217;rinishida) agregatlar holida uchraydi, ushlab ko&#8217;rilganda yog&#8217;simon. Rangi yashilsimon-sariq, qo&#8217;ng&#8217;irdan to&#8217;q yashilgacha. Sinishi chig&#8217;anoqsimon. Qattikligi mineralogik shkala bo&#8217;yicha 2, zichligi 1700-1900 kg\/m3. Sorbtsion xususiyatga ega, suvda ko&#8217;pchiydi. Nontronit \u2014 turli o&#8217;ta asosli otqindi va metamorfik tog&#8217;jinslaridagi tarkibida temir bo&#8217;lgan silikatlarning Nurashidan hosil bo&#8217;lgan tipik gipergen mineral. Nikel rudasi tarkibiga kiradi.
