Uglevodlar, yog&#8217;lar va oqsil (ami &#8211; nokislota)lar oksidativ (SO2 va N2O gacha) parchalanishining umumiy oxirgi bosqichi. 1930-y.larda Sent-derdi Di- karbon kislotalardan suktsivat, Fuma- rat, malat va oksaloatsetat vafas olish jarayonini bir necha baranar tezlatishi- ni, ya&#8217;ni katalitik ta&#8217;sir qilish xusu- siyatiga ega ekanligini ko&#8217;rsatib berdi. Keyinchaliku K.h.ning eng muhim reak- tsiyasi qisoblangan oksaloatsetat va pi- ruvat kislotadan tsitrat kislota hosil bo&#8217;lishini aniqladi. K.h. hayvon, o&#8217;simlik va mikroorga- nizmlar hujayrasida keng tarqalgan kislorodli vafas olish jarayonining asosiy bosqichi hisoblanadi. K.h. reak- tsiyalari (10-12 ta) mitoxondriyalarda kechadi. Halqa tsitrat kislotani hosil qilish b-n boshlanib, oksaloatsetat kis- lotasi hosil bo&#8217;lishi b-n tugallanadi. Bunda 2 mol. SO2 ajraladi va bir qator degidrogevaza fermentlarining Kofer- mentlari (q. Kofermentlar) qaytariladi (4 mol. VADN2 va 1 mol. FADN2). K.h. reaktsiyalarida dikarbon kislotalardan ketog&#8217;lutarat, suktsivat, fumarat, malat, oksaloatsetat va trikarbon kislotalar- dan tsitrat, tsisakonit, izositrat, oksa- losuktsivatlar ishtirok etadi. K.h &#8211; reak- tsiyalarida qatnashadigan substratlarga atsetat kislotani ham kiritish mumkin, bu kislota yog&#8217;kislotalarning faol par- chalanishi va uglevodlardan vujudga kelgan piruvatning dekarboksillanishi natijasida hosil bo&#8217;ladi. Piruvat kis- lota to&#8217;liq oksidlanganda 15 molekula, glyukoza molekulasi xuddi shunday par- chalanganda 38 molekula energiyaga boy ATF sintezlanadi. K.h.ning oraliq mahsulotlari mod- dalar almashinuvyning turli xil reak- tsiyalarida ishtirok etish uchun halqadan ajralib chiqishi mumkin. Mac, glyuko- neogenez (oksaloatsetat), porfirinlar sintezi (suktsivat), yog&#8217;kislotalar sinte- zi (atsetat) ana shu tariqa sodir bo&#8217;ladi. K.h.dan ajralib chiqadigan SO2 karbok- sillanish reaktsiyalari uchun asosiy man- ba hisoblanadi.
