T.h. vector hisobi bilan matrisalar nazariyasining taraqqiyoti va umumlashishi natijasida vujudga kelgan bo&#8217;lib, differentsial geometriya, Riman fazolari nazariyasi, nisbiylik nazariyasi, mexanika, elektrodinamika kabi fanlarda keng tatbiq etiladi. Tenzor tabiatli mikdor koordinatalarning xar bir tizimida bir necha son bilan aniklanadi. Tizim o&#8217;zgarishi bilan bu sonlar ham o&#8217;zgaradi va fizik hodisa yoki ob&#8217;ektning o&#8217;zini ifodalovchi sonlardan tashkari shunday son \u2014 mikdorlar vujudga keladiki, ular shu ob&#8217;ekt uchun tasodifiy rol o&#8217;ynaydi. T. h.da ana shu mikdorlar ta&#8217;siridan qutulish yo&#8217;llari ko&#8217;rsatiladi. T. h. ham vektorlar hisobi kabi koordinatalar tizimini tanlahsan ozod qiluvchi matematik apparatdan iborat. Biror tizimda berilgan tenzor komponent (tuzuvchi) lari istalgan boshqa tizimda ham aniklangan bo&#8217;ladi. Tenzorlar ustida hozirgacha qaralgan amallar algebraik amallar bo&#8217;lib, tenzorlar analizi (maydoni)da esa o&#8217;zgaruvchan tenzorlar (Hosila, xususiy Hosila, differentsial, integral, kovariant Hosila, kovariant differentsial) qaraladi. T.h.ning bu bo&#8217;limi matematika, fizikaning juda ko&#8217;p masalalarida muhim tatbiqiyamaliy tushunchalarni vujudga keltirish imkonini beradi. Tarixiy ma&#8217;lumot. T.h. 19-a.da differentsial geometriya, fizika ehtiyojlari natijasida vujudga kelgan differentsial kvadratik formalar nazariyasi asosida yaratilgan. Shuningdek, T.h.ning paydo bo&#8217;lishida sirtlar va ko&#8217;p o&#8217;lchovli fazolar geometriyasidagi izlanishlar juda muhim bo&#8217;ldi. T.h.ni hozirgi zamon talablari darajasiga etkazishda italiyalik matematiklar Richchikurbastro bilan Levichivitaning xizmatlari katta.
