Kristallar, amorf jismlar va suyukliklarning atom strukturasini, gaz va bug&#8217;lardagi molekulalarni o&#8217;rganishda qo&#8217;llaniladi. Elektronlar difraktsiyasi (zarralar difraktsiyasi) Elektronografiyaning fizik asosi hisoblanadi; to&#8217;lqin xossasiga ega bo&#8217;lgan elektronlar moddadan o&#8217;tayotganda atomlar bilan o&#8217;zaro ta&#8217;sirlashadi, natijada alohida difraktsiyalanadigan dastalar hosil bo&#8217;ladi. Bu dastalarning intensivligi va fazoda taqsimlanishi namunaning atom strukturasi, o&#8217;lchamlari va boshqalarga qat&#8217;iy mos keladi.
