Tabiiy birliklar tizimini birinchi bo&#8217;lib M. Plank taklif etgan (1906). Tabiiy birliklar tizimidagi asosiy birliklarning o&#8217;lchami tabiat hodisalariga asoslanib aniqlanadi; bu xususiyati bilan u boshqa birliklar tizimidan butunlay farq qiladi. Tabiiy birliklar tizimida uzunlik, massa va vaqt birliklari o&#8217;ta kichik qiymatga (masalan, Plank tizimida 4,031035 metrga; 5,42108 kilogrammga; 1,3410&#8243;43 s ga mos) va, aksincha, temperatura juda yuqori qiymatga ega (3,631032 S).
