Advor tushunchasi O&#8217;rta Osiyo madaniyatida qadimgi davrlar (taxminan miloddan avvalgi 1-ming yillik) da vujudga keladi. Dastlab u umumiy kosmogonik mazmunga ega bo&#8217;lib, tabiat jarayonlaridagi (masalan, yil fasllarining almashuvi, muchal-burjlar va osmon jismlarining harakat doiralari va hokazo) muntazam takrorlanuvchi holatlar bilan bog&#8217;liq deb faraz etilmish badiiy-estetik qonun-qoidalarga tayanadi. Advor ilk bor Kindiy (801-879) ning musiqiy risolalarida maxsus ilmiymusiqiy atama sifatida &#8220;ritmik doiralar&#8221; ma&#8217;nosida, Forobiy asarlarida musiqa asarlarining muvaqqat-fazoviy (ritmik, shakliy) nisbatlarni, &#8220;Ixvonus-safo&#8221; (10-asr) risolalarida esa universal-estetik tushunchalarni ham ifodalovchi atama sifatida qo&#8217;llaniladi. 12-13-asrlarda Advorning ma&#8217;no doirasi yanada kengayib, unda turkum (o&#8217;n ikki maqom, navbat, amal va boshqalar), alohida ijro etiladigan musiqa asarlarining tuzuklari (parda va tovush-qatorlar tizimi) va ritmik doiralari (usul va zarblar) aks ettirilgan. Ushbu universal musiqiy ma&#8217;nolardagi Advor atamasi 13-15-asrlarda, ayniqsa, al-Urmaviyning &#8220;Kitobuladvor&#8221; (&#8220;Aylanalar kitobi&#8221;) asaridan keyin musiqa istilohida &#8220;maqom&#8221; atamasiga teng ma&#8217;noda muhim o&#8217;rin egallagan. Urmaviyning mazkur asari va undan keyin yozilgan boshqa risolalarida o&#8217;n ikki maqom kuy tuzuklari va usullari muayyan nisbatlar asosida o&#8217;zaro mutanosib aylanalar shaklida ifoda etilgan. O&#8217;rta asrlar musulmon Sharqi musiqa ilmida ritmik vaqt birligi hamda ushbu birliklardan tashkil etilgan ritmik tuzilma (usul)lar ham davr yoki Advor deb atalib, risolalarda aylana shaklida ifoda etilgan.
