O&#8217;zbekiston Fanlar Akademiyasi akademigi (1943), Rossiya Fanlar Akademiyasi muxbir a&#8217;zosi (1929), O&#8217;zbekiston va Tojikistonda xizmat ko&#8217;rsatgan fan arbobi (1945, 1944), Toshkent gimnaziyasini, Turkiston o&#8217;qituvchilar seminariyasini tugatgan. Toshkentdagi Eshonquli dodho madrasasida o&#8217;qigan (1894). 1897 yil Mo&#8217;g&#8217;uliston va Sharqiy Turkiston ekspeditsiyalarida ishtirok etadi. 1918-20 yillarda Turkiston Sharqshunoslik instituti, keyinroq O&#8217;rta Osiyo davlat untida sharqshunoslik fakulteti dekani. 1927-47 yillarda dotsent, so&#8217;ngra professor. O&#8217;zbekiston Fanlar Akademiyasi Tarix va arxeologiya institutida etnografiya bo&#8217;limini boshqargan (1944-48). U O&#8217;rta Osiyo miqyosida o&#8217;tkazilgan bir qancha etnografik ekspeditsiyalarga rahbarlik qilgan. Asosiy ilmiy asarlarida Turkiston xalqlarining urf-odati, e&#8217;tiqodi, san&#8217;ati va dini yoritilgan.
