Dostonning ilk kurtaklari 7-asr 2-yarmida paydo bo&#8217;lgan. Ayrim manbalarning ma&#8217;lumotiga ko&#8217;ra, Doston qahramonlari tarixiy shaxslardir. Ularda Majnun Bani Omir qabilasidan chiqqan, asl ismi Qays ibn Mulavvah yoki Qays ibn Muod bo&#8217;lgan yigit, deya ta&#8217;kidlanadi. Qays Layli ismli o&#8217;z qabiladoshini sevgan hamda o&#8217;z sevgisi va hijron alamlari haqida mungli she&#8217;rlar bitgan. Bunday ma&#8217;lumot, jumladan, ibn Qutaybaning (889) &#8220;Kitob ush-she&#8217;r va shuaro&#8221; (&#8220;she&#8217;r va shoirlar haqida kitob&#8221;), Abul Faroj al-Isfahoniyning &#8220;kitob ul-ag&#8217;oni&#8221; (&#8220;Qo&#8217;shiq kitobi&#8221;) asarlarida keltirilgan. Arab olimlari al-Johiz (9-asr) va ibn al-Mu&#8217;taz (908)ning aytishicha, kishilar Layli nomi bilan bog&#8217;liq barcha she&#8217;rlarni Majnunga nisbat beraverganlar. 11-asrda shoir Abul Bakr al-Volibiy tomonidan Majnunga nisbat berilgan barcha she&#8217;rlar to&#8217;planib, &#8220;Devoni Majnun&#8221; tuziladi. Devonda she&#8217;rlarga sharhlar beriladi hamda she&#8217;rlar Majnun haqidagi rivoyatlarning syujetiga kiritiladi. Layli va Majnun haqida ilk bor 1188 yilda Ozarbayjon shoiri Nizomiy Ganjaviy Doston yaratgan. Nizomiy &#8220;Layli va Majnun&#8221; dostonini ham g&#8217;oyaviy, ham badiiy jihatdan har tomonlama yuksak darajaga ko&#8217;tardi va xamsachilik an&#8217;analari qatoriga qo&#8217;shdi. Undan so&#8217;ng &#8220;Layli va Majnun\u201d dostoniga ko&#8217;plab shoirlar murojaat qilishdi. Xusrav Dehlaviy, Abdurahmon Jomiy, Fuzuliy, Alisher Navoiy qalamlariga mansub &#8220;Layli va Majnun&#8221; dostonlari mashhur. Garchi ushbu dostonlar bitta nom bilan atalsa va ulardagi voqealar tizimi bir-biriga juda o&#8217;xshash bo&#8217;lsada, har bir muallifning &#8220;Layli va Majnun&#8221;i o&#8217;ziga xos va betakror asardir. Hozirgacha mazkur dostonning o\u2019zbek, arab, fors, ozarbayjon, turk, turkman, tojik, gruzin, Panjob, kurd, urdu tillaridagi ko&#8217;plab variantlari mavjud. &#8220;Layli va Majnun&#8221; dostoni xalq og&#8217;zaki ijodi ravnaqiga ham beqiyos ijobiy ta&#8217;sir ko&#8217;rsatgan. Jumladan, o&#8217;zbek xalq ijodiyotining &#8220;Tohir va Zuhra&#8221;, &#8220;oshiq g&#8217;arib&#8221; kabi dostonlariga &#8220;Layli va Majnun&#8221;ning ta&#8217;siri borligi e&#8217;tirof etiladi.
