Luven universiteti yuridik fakultetini tugatgan. &#171;Rohiblar&#187; (1886) to&#8217;plamida o&#8217;rta asrlardagi rohiblarning yorqin yig&#8217;ma obrazi berilgan. &#171;Oqshomlar&#187; (1887), &#171;Halokat&#187; (1888), &#171;qora mash&#8217;allar&#187; (1890) asarlari dekadentlik she&#8217;riyati ruhiga yaqin, bularda turmushni fojiaviy tasavvur etish kuchli. &#171;Telba qishloqlar&#187; (1893), &#171;g&#8217;ala-g&#8217;ovur shaharlar&#187; (1895) to&#8217;plamlarida ijtimoiy ziddiyatlarning (shu jumladan, shahar va qishloq o&#8217;rtasidagi ziddiyatlarning ham) halokatli ekanligini anglash ifodalangan. &#171;Turmush qirralari&#187; (1899), &#171;Bebosh kuchlar&#187; (1902), &#171;rang-barang yog&#8217;du&#187; (1906) va boshqa to&#8217;plamlaridagi she&#8217;rlarida Verxarn insonning yaratuvchilik faoliyatini, ijodni, sevgi va qat&#8217;iyatni tarannum etadi.
