Xlorofillning biologik xususiyati yorug&#8217;lik energiyasini o&#8217;zlashtirish va uni organik moddalarning kimyoviy energiyasiga aylantirishdan iborat. Xlorofillni birinchi marta frantsuz olimlari P. Pelte va J. Kavantu yashil rang sifatida o&#8217;simlik bargidan ajratishgan (1818). Rus olimi M. S. Svet bir-biriga o&#8217;xshash ikkita yashil pigment Xlorofill &#171;o&#187; va Xlorofill &#171;v&#187;ni kashf etgan (1910). Xlorofillni 1960 y. amerikalik kimyogar R. B. Vudvord xodimlari bilan to&#8217;la sintez qilib oldi. Xlorofillning miqsori o&#8217;simliklar turiga, bargning joylashishiga va boshqa sharoitlarga bog&#8217;liq. Xlorofill etishmasa o&#8217;simliklar o&#8217;sishi susayib, barglari sarg&#8217;ayadi.
