Assimilyatsiya \u2014 tiriklikning eng asosiy xususiyatlaridan biridir. Assimilyatsiya jarayonida organizmning o&#8217;sishi, rivojlanishi va yangilanishida energiya manbai sifatida foydalaniladigan moddalar to&#8217;planishi ta&#8217;minlanadi. Termodinamika nuqtai nazaridan organizmlar ochiq sistema bo&#8217;lib, ularga tashqi muhitdan energiya kelib turadi. Tirik organizmlar uchun quyosh nuri dastlabki energiya manbai hisoblanadi. Yer yuzida uchraydigan barcha tirik organizmlar energiya manbalaridan foydalanish xususiyatlariga ko&#8217;ra avtotrof va geterotrof guruhga ajratiladi.
