Metallar o&#8217;ziga xos eng muhim fizikkimyoviy xos- salari b-n boshqa oddiy va murakkab moddalardan farq qiladi. Bu xossalar faqat metallargagina mansub bo&#8217;lgan metall boglanish mavjudligi tufayli namoyon bo&#8217;ladi. Metall atomida valent elektronlar soni oz, lekin elektronlar b-n to&#8217;lmagan orbitallar ko&#8217;p. Valent elektronlar metall atomining yadro- si b-n ancha bo&#8217;sh bog&#8217;langanligi sababli kristall panjara ichida erkin harakat qiladi. Bu elektronlar harakati gaz qonunlariga bo&#8217;ysunganligi uchun ularni elektron gaz deb ataladi. Demak, nisba- tan ancha kam mikdordagi valent elek- tronlar ko&#8217;p mikdordagi metall ionla- rini o&#8217;zaro bog&#8217;lab turadi.
