Aristotel asar- larida S. tushunchasi substantsiya bilan aynanlashtirib, individual borliq si- fatida berilgan. 17-a.dan S. tushuncha- sini gnoseologik ma&#8217;noda talqin etish boshlandi. Yangi davr materialistlari S.ni ob&#8217;ektiv va azaliy mavjud bo&#8217;lgan tashqi voqelikni passiv aks ettirish, idrok qilish, undan nusxa olish bilan- gina chegaralangan biluvchi materiya si- fatida tushuntirishgan. Ular S.ning mohiyatida yotuvchi G&#8217;aqiqiy faollikni, ya&#8217;ni bilish jarayonida aynan shu FA- ollik voqelikni chuqurroq, kengroq, batafsilroq, mukammalroq bilib olish- ga imkon yaratishini tushunib eta olish- madi. Chunki u davrda S. faolligining zamirida uning aniq faoliyati yotishi haqidagi gnoseologik tamoyil yaratil- magan edi. Idealistlar ob&#8217;ektning mav- judligi S. faoliyatining natijasi deb talqin etishdi. Ular S.ni individ ongi, Xudo, goya va b. tarzida tushuntirish aso- sida uning bilish jarayonidagi faollik rolini izohlashga harakat qilishdi. Hoz. zamon gnoseologik tadqiqotlarida S. ob&#8217;ekt bilan bog&#8217;liqlikda olib qaraladi, ayrim kontsepsiyalarda ob&#8217;ek- tning Sdan mustaqil holda mavjudligi ta&#8217;kidlanadi. Ayni paytda S. ob&#8217;ektga faol o&#8217;zgartiruvchi ta&#8217;sir qiladi va S. ob&#8217;ektni &#171;.insoniylashtiradi&#187;. Bunday S. bilan ob&#8217;ektning o&#8217;zaro aloqadorligi asosida ijtimoiy-tarixiy amaliyot yota- Di. S. hisoblangan individ va uning ongi ham tadqiqot ob&#8217;ekti bo&#8217;lib keli- shi mumkin. Individ S. sifatida jami- yatning bir a&#8217;zosi, tarixiy jarayonning bir vakili sifatida u mansub bo&#8217;lgan jamiyat a&#8217;zolariga xos bilimlarga ega va shu nuqtai nazardan olamga qaraydi. Individ ijtimoiy mavjudot, shu ma&#8217;- noda S. ijtimoiy mazmun kasb etadi, ya&#8217;ni jamiyat a&#8217;zosi bo&#8217;lgan ayrim indi- Vid ham, jamiyatning o&#8217;zi ham S. bo&#8217;lib kelishi mumkin. Jamiyat uni tadqiq etuvchi tadqiqotchi uchun esa ob&#8217;ektdir, o&#8217;zidan tashqi olam uchun uni o&#8217;rganuvchi S.dir. Inson o&#8217;z ehtiyoj va amaliy hayot talablaridan kelib chiqib, tashqi olam- ni o&#8217;zgartirish, o&#8217;ziga moslashtirish asosida ikkinchi tabiatni yaratdi. Bu holat S. ob&#8217;ektni o&#8217;z xohishiga ko&#8217;ra o&#8217;zgartirganligining oqibatidir.
