Substantia \u2014 mohiyat) \u2014 narsa va hodisalarning mohiyatini, asosini ifodalovchi tushun- cha. Odatda, materiya, modda so&#8217;zining si- nonimi sifatida qo&#8217;llaniladi. S. fal- safada xilmaxil olamning, ob&#8217;ektiv reallikning, tabiat, jamiyat, inson va uning tafakkuri tarixini, inson bi- limlarining natijalarini ham o&#8217;ziga qamrab oluvchi konkretlikning nazariy in&#8217;ikosi, bilish nazariyasining aso- siy tushunchasi sifatida talqin eti- ladi. Bunday universal mohiyat muay- Yan narsa, hodisalar va ularning o&#8217;zaro aloqadorliklari orqali namoyon bo&#8217;ladi. Yunon faylasuflari S. deb narsalarning doimiy, tub va o&#8217;zgarmas xususiyatini, asl mohiyatini anglashgan, un-ta aktsidentsiya tushunchasini qaramaqarshi qo&#8217;yishgan. Keyinchalik sxolastlar butun mavju- dotning asl mohiyatini tashkil etuvchi S. \u2014 Xudodir degan g&#8217;oyani ilgari surdi- lar (q. Sxolastika). Olamning moddiy sababi va ilohiy S. haqidagi dualistic talqinni R. Dekart olg&#8217;a surdi, u Spinoza falsafasida yanada rivojlantirildi. I. Kant Sni tafakkurning aprior shakli, ya&#8217;ni tajribadan olingan bilimlarni sintezlovchi shakli deb izohladi. Uning fikricha, S.ning doimiyligi barcha vaqt mobaynida o&#8217;tkinchi bo&#8217;lgan narsalar- ga nisbatangina namoyon bo&#8217;ladi. Gegel Sni narsalardagi o&#8217;zgaruvchan, o&#8217;tkinchi tomonlarning yaxlitligi sifatida ta&#8217;- riflab, uni &#171;har qanday haqiqiy rivoj- lanishning asosidir&#187;, deydi. Sharq falsafasida Forobiy Sni eng umumiylik sifatida tushuntirgan. Ibn Sino Sni &#171;substantsional umumiylik va aktsidental umumiylik&#187;ning o&#8217;zaro mu- nosabati doirasida talqin etib, ular- ning birbiri bilan bog&#8217;langanligiga, biri ikkinchisisiz mavjud bo&#8217;la olmas- ligiga e&#8217;tiborni qaratdi. Sni tushu- nishda ham materialistik, ham idea- listik qarash bor. Materialistlar S. deb ob&#8217;ektiv reallikni, materiyani, idealistlar esa, Xudoni, mutlaq g&#8217;oyani, ruhni, umuman moddiy bo&#8217;lmagan asos- ni tushunadilar. Pozitivistlar Sni mavhum tushuncha sifatida ta&#8217;riflab, bu tushuncha tadqiqotchini chalg&#8217;itib, uning fikrini yo&#8217;q narsaga bog&#8217;lab qo&#8217;yadi, as- lida odam xilmaxilliklar va ularning birliklaridan iborat, bunga esa mod- diylik ham, ma&#8217;naviylik ham kiradi deb hisoblashadi.
