Advokat oilasi- da tugilgan. 1799 y.da harbiy vazirlik xizmatiga kirgan, Napoleon I armiya- sida xizmatda bo&#8217;lgan (1806-14). So&#8217;ng Italiyaga kelib, J. Bayron bilan ta- nishgan. Italyan romantiklarining &#171;Conciliatore&#187; (&#171;yarashtiruvchi&#187;) jurna- li bilan hamkorlik qilgan. 1815 y.dan boshlab S.ning dastlabki asarlari e&#8217;lon qilina boshlagan. Bu asarlardagi Respu- blikachilik ruhi va cherkov sha&#8217;niga ay- tilgan nomunosib so&#8217;zlar Avstriya poli- tsiyasida S.ga nisbatan shubha uyg&#8217;otadi. Hayoti xavf ostida qolgan S. 1821 y.da Parijga qaytib, maqolalar yozadi, roman- tizm haqidagi munozaralarga kirishadi va publisistik risolalar e&#8217;lon qiladi. 1830 y. Iyul inqilobidan keyin S. dastlab Triestda, so&#8217;ngra Rim yaqinidagi bir shaharchada frantsuz konsuli lavo- zimida xizmat qiladi. S. Hayotining bu shaharchadagi so&#8217;nggi 10 yili qizg&#8217;in ijod bilan kechadi. S. ijodi 18-19-a.larning tutash nuq,tasida boshlanganiga qaramay, u imperiya qalokatga uchragunga qadar xavaskor yozuvchi darajasidan yuqori ko&#8217;tarilmadi. 1814 y.dan tiklanish (Re- stavrasiya)ning so&#8217;ngiga qadar bo&#8217;lgan davrda S.ning ijtimoiyfalsafiy va adabiyestetik qarashlari uzilkesil shakllandi. U shu davrda &#171;Gaydn, Mosart va Metastazio hayoti&#187; (1817), &#171;Itali- yadagi rang-tasvir tarixi&#187;, &#171;Rim, ne- Apol va Florentsiya&#187; (1817), &#171;muhabbat to&#8217;g&#8217;risida&#187; (1822), &#171;Rossini hayoti&#187; (1824), &#171;Rasin va Shekspir&#187; (1823-25), &#171;Rim bo&#8217;ylab sayr&#187; (1829) singari Pu- blisistik, falsafiypsixologik, shu- ningdek, san&#8217;at haqidagi asarlari va yo&#8217;l xotiralarini e&#8217;lon qildi. U qariyb 30 y. davom etgan tayyorgarlikdan keyin yirik badiiy asarlar yozishga kirishib, &#171;Armans&#187; (3 j.li, 1927), &#171;Kizil va kora&#187; (1831), &#171;Parma ibodatxonasi&#187; (1939) ro- manlari, &#171;Vanina Vanini&#187; (1829) xiko- yasi, &#171;Vittoriya Akkoramboni&#187;, &#171;Chenchi&#187; (1837), &#171;gersoginya Palliano&#187; (1838) va &#171;Kastrolik abbatisa&#187; (1839) singari yo&#8217;l xotiralarini yaratdi. Bundan tashkari, S. shu davrda &#171;Xudbinning xotiralari&#187; (1832) va &#171;Anri Bryular hayoti&#187; (1835) avtobiografik kissalari, &#171;Lyusen Le- Ven&#187; (1834-36), &#171;lamel&#187; (1839-42) romanlari, &#171;Minna Vangel&#187; (1829-36) qissasi va b. asarlarini ezdi. Tanqidiy realizmning shaxsga ta- rixiylik printsipi asosida yonda- shish, voqealar va xarakterlarning haqqoniyligiga erishish, xulqatvorlarni sinchkovlik bilan o&#8217;rganish, ongshuur harakatini taxlil etish haqidagi tala- blari S. realizmining asosini tashkil etadi. S. &#171;Armans&#187; romanida shu prin- tsiplarga amal qilishga uringan bo&#8217;lsada, bu printsiplar yozuvchining shoh asari \u2014 &#171;Kizil va kora&#187; romanida o&#8217;zining mu- kammal ifodasini topgan. &#171;Kizil va kora&#187; romani S. ning yuk- sak mahorati bilan 19-a.ning taeutiliy xronikasi darajasiga ko&#8217;tarildi. Asar- da &#171;salon hayotidan ko&#8217;rinishlar&#187;gina emas, balki tiklanish davridagi qariyb butun Frantsiyaning hayoti o&#8217;z aksini top- gan. S. Jyulen Sorel obrazini yaratish orqali frantsuz jamiyatining ijtimoiy tabiatini va bu jamiyatda kechgan kurash- ni katta badiiy kuch bilan ko&#8217;rsatgan. S.ning tugallanmay qolgan &#171;Lyusen Le- Ven&#187; romanida esa iyul monarxiyasining dastlabki yillaridagi siyosiy-ijtimo- iy va xususiy hayotning keng manzarasi tasvirlangan. S. ijodi frantsuz adabiyo- tining keyingi taraqqiyotiga katta ta&#8217;- sir ko&#8217;rsatdi va jag&#8217;on miqyosida Shuhrat qozondi. S.ning tasvirlash maxrrati, jamiyat hayotini badiiy taxlil kilish san&#8217;ati romandan romanga o&#8217;sib bora- Di. S. adabiyotshunoslik, san&#8217;at tarixi, falsafa va psixologiya masalalariga oid asarlar ham yaratgan. Uning asosiy asar- lari o&#8217;zbek tiliga tarjima qilingan.
