Birinchi marta ingliz olimi F. Griffit (1928) pnevmokokklarda kashf etgan. F. Griffit patogen pnevmokokklarni qizdirib o&#8217;ldirganda ular sichqonlarni zararlamasligini, lekin bakteriyalarni patogenlik xususiyatiga ega bo&#8217;lmagan tirik bakteriyalar bilan birga sichqonlarga yuborilganda nopatogen bakteriyalar patogenlik xususiyatiga ega bo&#8217;lishini aniqlagan. AQSh olimi o. Eyveri va uning xodimlari (1944) nopatogen bakteriyalar patogen bo&#8217;lib qolishi (transformasiyalanishi)ning sababi patogen bakteriya shtammidan ajralgan DNK bilan bog&#8217;liq ekanligini aniqladi. T. keyinchalik har xil turkum va turlarga mansub bakteriyalar \u2014 streptokokk, gemofill bakteriyalar, pichan tayoqchasi va b.da aniqlangan. T. hodisasi kompetentlik xususiyatiga ega bo&#8217;lgan ayrim hujayralar bilan bog&#8217;liq (hujayraning yot DNK ni bog&#8217;lash xususiyati maxsus oqsil molekulasi sintezlanishi bilan tushuntiriladi). Transformasiyalaydigan DNKning mol. massasi 300000 dan kam bo&#8217;lmasligi, 2 spiralli va kimyoviy toza bo&#8217;lishi lozim. Hujayraga donor DNK sining bir bo&#8217;lagi o&#8217;tib, hujayra xromosomasi bilan rekombinasiyalanadi va uning xossasini o&#8217;zgartiradi. T. dan bakteriyalarni genetik analiz qilishda va genetik injeneriya sohasidagi tajribalarda foydalaniladi. T. jarayonining kashf etilishi va o&#8217;rganilishi natijasida Dnkirsiyatning moddiy asosi ekanligi aniqlandi. T. dan eukariot hujayralarga yot DNK ni kiritishda ham foydalaniladi (yana q.
