Moskva universitetining tibbiyot fakultetini tugatgan (1884), shifokor bo&#8217;lib ishlagan. 1892-98 yillarda Moskva yaqinidagi Melixovo qishlog&#8217;i (hozirgi Chexov shahri) da yashab, mahalliy dehqonlarga tibbiy yordam ko&#8217;rsatgan, ularning bolalari uchun maktablar ochgan. Sil kasali bilan og&#8217;rib, 1898 yil Yaltaga ko&#8217;chgan. Salomatligi yomonlashgach, 1904 yil iyunida Badenveyler (Germaniya)ga borgan va u yerda vafot etgan. Chexov ijodi 3 davrdan iborat: 1) 80-yillarning o&#8217;rtalariga qadar bo&#8217;lgan davr; 2) 80-yillarning o&#8217;rtalaridan 90-yillarning boshlariga qadar bo&#8217;lgan davr; 3) 90-yillarning boshlaridan yozuvchi vafotiga qadar bo&#8217;lgan davr. Chexov ijodining dastlabki davrida turli noshirlarning didi va buyurtmasi bilan asosan hazil-mutoyibadan iborat asarlar yozgan bo&#8217;lsada, shu davrdayoq yozuvchi ijodining asosiy mavzulari (inson va amal, go&#8217;zallik va razolat, hayotning serhasham va g&#8217;arib tomonlari va boshqalar) yuzaga chiqa boshladi. Chexov shu davrda yozgan &#171;Semiz va oriq&#187;, &#171;Chinovnikning o&#8217;limi&#187; (1893), &#171;Buqalamun&#187;, &#171;Niqob&#187; (1884), &#171;Unter Prishibeyev&#187; (1885) singari hikoyalarida mavzuni kulgi yordamida yoritish, hajviy obraz yaratish, voqea va hodisalarni lo&#8217;nda tasvirlash san&#8217;atini mukammal egallaganini namoyish qiladi. Chexov ijodining 2-davrida yozuvchining Markaziy mavzusi aniq qirralar kasb etadi. Qahramonning ruhiy olami va hatto voqeahodisalarning rivoji emas, balki ijtimoiy munosabatlar va maishiy to&#8217;qnashuvlarning qahramon xarakteriga ta&#8217;siri masalasi Chexovning diqqat markazida bo&#8217;ladi. Bu masala, birinchi navbatda, Chexovning &#171;G&#8217;ilof bandasi&#187; (1898) hikoyasida o&#8217;zining yorqin tajassumini topadi. Bu asarda g&#8217;ilof yolg&#8217;on va zulmga, kimningdir ayshishrat qilib, kimningdir azob-uqubat chekib yashashiga asoslangan hayotning timsoliga aylanadi. Chexov ijodining shu bosqichida ko&#8217;zga tashlangan tamoyillar 3-davrda yangi badiiy kuch bilan ifodalanadi. Chexovning &#171;Boloxonali uy&#187;, &#171;Mening hayotim&#187; (1896) qissalari, &#171;Ionich&#187; (1898), &#171;Laycha etaklagan xonim&#187; (1899) va boshqa hikoyalarida shu davrdagi rus jamiyatining anatomiyasi shafkatsizlik bilan ochib tashlandi. Bu asarlarda insonning lokaydligi mavzusi faqat ma&#8217;naviypsixologik rejada emas, balki ijtimoiy yo&#8217;nalishda ham badiiy tadqiq etildi. Chexov turli tabaqa va ijtimoiy qatlamlarga nazar tashlab, o&#8217;z qahramonining ruhiy uyg&#8217;onish, muhitga qarshilik ko&#8217;rsatish, hayotini qayta qurish qobiliyatini muttasil ravigsda tekshirib turadi. Chexovning dramaturgiya sohasidagi ijodi rus teatri taraqqiyotiga katta ta&#8217;sir ko&#8217;rsatdi. Yozuvchining nasriy asarlarida o&#8217;z ifodasini topgan kishilar o&#8217;rtasidagi ruhiy aloqalarning yo&#8217;kdigi mavzusi uning sahna asarlarida ham turli shaklda talqin etilgan. Chexov nasriy va dramaturgik ijodi bilan jahon adabiyoti taraqqiyotiga sezilarli ta&#8217;sir ko&#8217;rsatdi. O&#8217;zbek adabiyotida realistik xikoya janrining maydonga kelishi va Abdulla Qodiriy, Cho&#8217;lpon, Abdulla Qahhor hikoyanavislik ijodining shakllanishida Chexov an&#8217;analari ham muayyan omil bo&#8217;lib xizmat qilgan. Chexovning eng yaxshi nasriy asarlari va pyesalari o&#8217;zbek tiliga tarjima etilgan. Uning barcha mashhur pesalari respublikadagi o&#8217;zbek va rus teatrlarida sahnalashtirilgan.
