Navoiy bu devonini umrining so&#8217;nggi yillarida, taxminan 1492-98 yillar orasida tuzgan. Ulug\u2019 shoir &#171;Muhokamat ul-lug&#8217;atayn&#187; asarida o&#8217;zining forsiy tildagi she&#8217;rlaridan Xoja Hofiz Sheroziy devoniga o&#8217;xshatib (&#171;Xoja Hofiz tavrida&#187;) devon tuzganini ma&#8217;lum qilarkan, shunday deydi: &#171;yana forsiy g&#8217;azaliyot Xoja Hofiz tavridakim, jame&#8217; suxanadolar va nazmpiyrolar nazarida mustahsan va matbu&#8217;dir, tartib beribmenkim, olti mingdan ab&#8217;yoti adadi (&#171;baytlar miqdori&#187;) ko&#8217;prakdurki, ko&#8217;prak ul hazratu (Xoja Hofiz) she&#8217;riga tatabbu&#8217; voqe&#8217; bo&#8217;lubdur&#187;. &#171;Devoni foniy&#187;dagi she&#8217;rlarning katta qismini Navoiy salaflari va zamondoshlarining g&#8217;azallariga yozilgan tatabbular tashkil etadi. 554 g&#8217;azaldan 237 tasi Hofiz Sheroziy, 52 tasi Abdurahmon Jomiy, 33 tasi Xusrav Dehlaviy, 25 tasi Sa&#8217;diy Sheroziy, 5 tasi Mavlono Kotibiy, 5 tasi Mavlono Shohiy, 4 tasi Kamol Xo&#8217;jandiy va boshqa shoirlarning g&#8217;azallariga bog&#8217;langan. Bunda eng ko&#8217;p g&#8217;azal Hofiz Sheroziy g&#8217;azallariga bog&#8217;langani va uning she&#8217;rlaridan ilxomlanib yozilgani Navoiyning bu buyuk iste&#8217;dod egasiga ixlosi yuksak bo&#8217;lganidan dalolat beradi. &#171;Devoni foniy&#187;dan Navoiy (foniy)ning o&#8217;z original g\u2019azallari ham o&#8217;rin olgan. Shoir ularni &#171;Muxtara&#187;, &#171;Ixtiro&#187; deb atab, shu yo&#8217;sinda tatabbulardan ajratib ko&#8217;rsatgan. Shoirning tatabbu, muxtara she&#8217;rlarida ishq-muhabbat mavzui ham dunyoviy, ham tasavvufiy-majoziy uslublarda kuylangan. Navoiyning chuqur ijtimoiy-siyosiy va axloqiy mazmunda yozilgan &#171;Tuhfat ul-afkor&#187; qasidasi esa &#171;Sittai zaruriya&#187; to&#8217;plamidan tashqari &#171;Devoni foniy&#187; qo&#8217;lyozmalarida ham uchraydi. Bu qasidasi bilan Navoiy o&#8217;zbek adabiyotida bu she&#8217;riy turni yangi yuksak pog&#8217;onaga ko&#8217;targan. Ushbu qasidani va &#171;Devoni foniy&#187;dan o&#8217;rin olgan bir qator she&#8217;rlarni M. Muinzoda, A. Hayitmetov va boshqa o&#8217;zbek tiliga tarjima qilishgan. &#171;Devoni foniy&#187;ni ilmiy o&#8217;rganish ishiga S. Ayniy, H. Sulaymon, Sh. Shomuhamedov, N. Mallayev, E. Shodiyev, Ali Muhammadiy kabi olimlar munosib hissa qo&#8217;shishgan. &#171;Devoni foniy&#187;ning beshta qadimgi qo&#8217;lyozma nusxalari mavjud bo&#8217;lib, ular chet el qo&#8217;lyozma fondlarida saqlanadi. Jumladan, ikkitasi frantsuz Milliy kutubxonasi (Parij)da, yana ikkitasi Turk Islom muzeyi kutubxonasida va &#171;Nuri Usmoniya&#187; kutubxonasi (Turkiya)da, yana biri Tehrondagi Eron Davlat Majlisi kutubxonasida saqlanadi. Bu qulyozmalarning aksariyati Navoiy hayotligida ko&#8217;chirilgan, ulardan mukammal va to&#8217;lig&#8217;i Parijdagi Milliy kutubxonada saqlanayotgan nusxadir. Unda 554 g&#8217;azal, 1 musaddas, 1 marsiya, 72 qit&#8217;a, 73 ruboiy, 16 tarix, 373 mu-ammo, 9 lug&#8217;z (she&#8217;riy topishmoq) \u2014 jami 1131 she&#8217;r bo&#8217;lib, 6197 baytni tashkil etadi. Ushbu devonni O&#8217;zbekistonda ilk bor professor Hamid Sulaymonov nashrga tayyorlagan (Alisher Navoiy, asarlar [15 jildli], T., 1965, 5-j.).
