Matematika va fizika professor (1854-68). Ispaniya Qirollik akademiyasi a&#8217;zosi (1884). Dastlab siyosiy faoliyat bilan shug&#8217;ullangan. 1868 yil ijtimoiy ishlar vaziri, bir yildan so&#8217;ng savdo vaziri bo&#8217;lgan. Ispaniya parlamentiga saylangan. Adabiy faoliyat bilan shug&#8217;ullana boshlagach yaratgan ilk pyesalari: &#171;qilich dastasida&#187; (1875), &#171;O&#8217;lim quchog&#8217;ida&#187; (1879) \u2014 romantizmning ispan dramaturgiyasidagi o&#8217;ziga xos qayta tiklanishidir. Echegarayi hozirgi hayotni tasvirlovchi realistik pyesalari (&#171;telbalik va avliyolik&#187;, 1877; &#171;Buyuk Galeoto&#187;, 1881) da o&#8217;sha davr aristokratiyasi axloqini fosh qiladi, naturalistik dramaning asosiy qoidalarini asoslab beradi. Uning &#171;don Juanning o&#8217;g&#8217;li&#187; (1892), &#171;aqldan ozgan Xudo&#187; (1900) kabi psixologik dramalarida norveg dramaturgi G. Ibsenning ta&#8217;siri sezilib turadi. Jami 60 ta pyesa yozgan, ularning yarmi nazmda bitilgan.
