Fagositoz hodisasini rus Fagot, olimi I.I.Mechnikov kashf etgan (1882). Umurtqasiz hayvonlarda Fagositlar vazifasini amyobositlar (gemolimfa tarkibidagi harakatchan hujayralar) bajaradi. Umurtqalilarda qonning shaklli elementlaridan biri \u2014 neytrofillar (mikrofaglar), retikuloendotelial sistema hujayralari va faol makrofaglarga aylana oladigan mikrogliylar Fagositlar hisoblanadi. Neytrofillar mayda zarralar (bakteriyalar va boshqalar) ni, makrofaglar o&#8217;lgan hujayralar yoki ularning qismlarini qamrab olish, manfiy zaryadlangan bo&#8217;yoq va kolloid moddalarni to&#8217;plash xususiyatiga ega. Plazmatik membrana bilan o&#8217;rab olingan zarrachalar tsitoplazmaga o&#8217;tgandan so&#8217;ng fagosomalarga aylanadi.
