Qadimgi Rimda qurilgan yo&#8217;llarning tavsifi birmuncha batafsilroq. O&#8217;sha zamonlarda metropoliyaning (asosiy shahar \u2014 poytaxtning) viloyatlar bilan bog&#8217;lanishi uchun 85 000 kilometr uzunlikdagi yo&#8217;llar tarmog\u2019i bunyod etilgan edi. Rim yo&#8217;llarining kengligi 4,5 metr atrofida bo&#8217;lgan va besh qatlamdan tarkib topgan. Uning qiyalamasi talqonlangan lava bilan qoplangan, asosi esa shibbalangan mayda shag\u2019aldan iborat bo&#8217;lgan. Yuqoridan bostirilgan yirik toshtaxtachalar ohak qorishmasi bilan mustahkamlangan edi. Bunaqa yo&#8217;l har qanday ob-havo sharoitida mustahkamligi va o&#8217;tkazuvchanlik qobiliyatini saqlagan. Suv oqovasini osonlashtirish maqsadida yo&#8217;ldan o&#8217;ngda va chapda kyuvetlar \u2014 xuddi yo&#8217;lning o&#8217;zidek tosh qoplamali ariqchalar jihozlangan edi. Rimliklar tomonidan yaratilgan yo&#8217;llar qurish texnologiyasi XIX asr boshlariga qadar, ya&#8217;ni shotlandiyalik muhandis Jon Mak \u2014 Adam (1756 \u2014 1836) yo&#8217;l qoplamasining tubdan yangi konstruktsiyasini yaratgan pallagacha deyarli o&#8217;zgarmasdan qoldi. Gudron shimdirilgan qum asfalt nomini oldi.
