Fotosintezlovchi mikroorganizmlarga qirmizi va yashil bakteriyalar, tsianobakteriyalar, proxlofitlar, ayrim galobakteriyalar hamda suvo&#8217;tlar bo&#8217;limiga mansub bir qancha eukariot organizmlar (diatomlar, evglenasimonlar, pirofitlar, tillarang va sariqyashil suvo&#8217;tlar va boshqalar) kiradi. Barcha Fotosintezlovchi mikroorganizmlada (galobakteriyalardan tashqari) fotosintez xuddi yashil o&#8217;simliklar singari xlorofill ishtirokida boradi. Galobakteriyalarda esa fotosintez funktsiyasini oqsil kompleksi bajaradi. Tsianobakteriyalar va suvo&#8217;tlarda fotosintezda O2 ajraladi. Boshqa Fotosintezlovchi mikroorganizmlarda fotosintezda O2 hosil bo&#8217;lmaydi; ular elektron donori sifatida suvdan emas, balki sulfidlar, tiosulfit, vodorod va organik moddalardan foydalanadi. Ko&#8217;pchilik Fotosintezlovchi mikroorganizmlar molekulyar azotni o&#8217;zlashtiradi. Fotosintezlovchi mikroorganizmlar suv havzalarida ko&#8217;p uchraydi.
